Hot Off The Grill
You are what your food eats Ethical and health-focused livestock management by growing number of family farms is boosting the nutrient profile of your favourite meat. While unwary shoppers are spending money on weight-loss products, the savvy athlete is now getting lean with each delicious bite of pasture-raised red meat. Loaded with protein, conjugated linoleic acid (to help maintain lean body mass), Omega-3 fatty acids, iron, creatine, B12, and other blood and muscle building blocks, today's pasture-raised, grass-fed meat is giving us great bang for our grocery dollar.
A study published in the Journal of Animal Sciences shows grass fed beef is up to sixty-six per cent lower in total fat, and the remaining fat has two to four times the overall Omega-3 fatty acid content compared to conventional grain finished beef. Trying to lean up for your big event? Over the rumble of your empty stomach, consider that a six-ounce portion of grass fed meat has one hundred fewer calories than a six-ounce portion of grain-fed beef. The grain-fed beef contains "garbage" calories from saturated fat. Conclusion: eat more, weigh less.
