Who We Are
We offer laser eye surgery and other vision correction options, such as multifocal lens implants. Boyd Vision Centre is one of the few clinics that can offer a full range of treatments to best suit your needs and situation.
The staff of Boyd Vision Centre are very experienced and dedicated. Our medical technologist has been involved in laser eye surgery since the very first case was done in Canada in 1990. Our laser technician worked at a high volume laser centre, assisting in thousands of procedures, before joining us in 2002.
Dr. Michael J. Boyd, M.D.
As a proven laser eye surgeon with extensive experience in Canada, Dr. Boyd has performed over 15,000 PRK and LASIK laser eye surgeries.
Specialist Dr. Michael J. Boyd is an expert surgeon who will explain the procedures of the preparation, the surgery and the post-operative care so you feel comfortable and confident with your choice. Dr. Boyd completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Ottawa in 1984, and his American Board of Ophthalmology qualifications in 1986. He has studied and performed ophthalmic procedures under several leading ophthalmologists in England, Saudi Arabia and the United States.
Dr. Boyd is a staff surgeon at Burnaby General Hospital. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the European Society of Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Boyd has performed laser refractive surgery since 1995 as an independent surgeon, working with many other leading refractive surgeons. He operates out of his general ophthalmology practice in Burnaby, where he has an accredited laser eye surgery facility.
What We Do
We are one of the few clinics in Canada who are able to offer so many different options for vision correction, including PRK, LASIK, refractive lens exchange, and multifocal intraocular lenses. Dr. Boyd believes firmly in offering the option that is best for each individual patient, rather than trying to fit the patient's needs into a small range of options.
Laser Eye Surgery
Laser refractive surgery can be divided into two main categories: LASIK (laser insitu keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive kratectomy). Both use the laser in the same manner, but the initial aspects of the procedure are different between the two surgeries. Either procedure can be used to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
Also, a wavefront-guided treatment can be done utilizing either PRK or LASIK. This adds a customized element to the procedure. Doing a wavefront-guided surgery allows the laser to apply a treatment that eliminates mild distortion in the vision that glasses or a normal treatment is able to achieve. This is similar to buying a tailormade garment compared to off-the-rack clothing.
Laser eye surgery to reduce or eliminate refractive errors is considered an elective procedure. Nobody requires LASIK or PRK. Results cannot be guaranteed to provide the same or better vision than one's present glasses or contact lenses, even though the vast majority of patients are very happy with the results. As with any surgery, there are some risks and side-effects to be considered.
